Understanding Rate Per Mile
Rate Per Mile (RPM) is the most fundamental metric in freight pricing. It divides the quoted flat rate by the exact number of road miles between origin and destination. Brokers and carriers use RPM to compare loads across different lane lengths, evaluate market competitiveness, and make quick accept/reject decisions.
Line-Haul vs. All-In RPM: The line-haul RPM reflects only the base rate. When a fuel surcharge (FSC) is added, the all-in RPM gives a more complete picture of what the carrier actually earns per mile. Some rate confirmations bundle FSC into the line-haul; others break it out separately. This tool handles both scenarios.
Market Context: Dry van spot rates typically range from $2.00 to $2.75 per mile nationally, though this varies significantly by lane, season, and market conditions. The benchmarks shown are directional guidance, not real-time market data.
Tip: Use the Cost Per Mile (CPM) Calculator to determine your all-in operating cost, then plug it in here to see your true margin. Pair with the Fuel Surcharge Calculator to compute FSC from current diesel prices.
